Off-Broadway Players to hold auditions for Festival Production; Amadeus
The Off-Broadway Players have selected Peter Shaffer's play Amadeus as their entry in the 60th Provincial Drama Festival, and are holding auditions this weekend.
Amadeus will be directed by Danny Maloney. Maloney last directed the Off-Broadway Players in their production of "Lend Me a Tenor," a play that won best production, and brought Maloney best director honours, at the 2007 Provincial Drama Festival.
Amadeus is the winner of a Tony Award for Best play, and was made into a film which won the Academy Award for best picture in 1984. In the play, which is primarily a drama, Antonio Salieri is the established composer for the Emperor when the musical genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart comes onto the scene. The drama of the play picks up as Salieri is forced to realise his own mediocrity in the face of Mozart's God given talent.
Maloney says that he was drawn to the play because of the writing and the complexity of the roles. "It's a very complex script with some very complicated characters. It's going to be a challenging piece for us as a company, but we are going to have a lot of fun with it as well."
Directing this year's production comes with a little bit more pressure, since the Off-Broadway Players will be presenting their production on home soil for this year's festival. The Provincial Drama Festival is being held at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Center from April 3rd - 11th, 2010. This brings mixed feelings for Maloney.
"The idea of performing the festival in front of our home crowd is certainly exciting, but it does bring a level of pressure," says Maloney. "But the fact that we are performing at home has allowed us to select a fairly big show. We are going to have a fairly big cast, and there are some strong technical requirements that might have been an issue had we been travelling this production. This is certainly a great show to do for our Corner Brook audience."
Auditions for Amadeus are being held this Sunday, December 13th, from 1:00 - 4:00 at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Room AS378. There is no need to book an audition time. This is an open audition, and anybody is welcome to come and read for a part.
Anyone interested in auditioning but unavailable on Sunday is asked to contact Danny by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone, after 7:00 pm at 709.632.5632, in order to arrange an additional audition time.
